meet angelina & eliza

I met Angelina while exploring the market in San Cristobal. It was a rainy day and not many artisans were out. There she was sitting beneath her tent filled with her & her sisters beautiful artwork, books, and cards. I stopped and sifted through tons of her books as we tried to communicate about a collaboration (my Spanish isn't too great at the moment). it was so hard to decide on what to pick from her, everything was so beautiful! What made it most exciting was seeing how much she enjoyed what she did and how proud she was of their art.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

We are originate from the community municipality of San Juan Chamula in Chiapas San Cristobal for over 30 years. We are Tzotzil speakers.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START MAKING BOOKS?

We realized that we threw out so much of our paper at home used by our children from school, so we started experimenting doing some research on how we could reuse the paper. so we started to improve and create the books by adding flowers and painting with colors. we used to paint our costumes and were adding natural fibers such as tree bark, so my sister and I joined to make this beautiful work.  it has also become a source of income for us & is satisfying to do it.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN MAKING BOOKS?

About 5 years.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT WORKING WITH YOUR HANDS?

Absolutely everything. Since we expect the wet paper, we know that our hands need to do something wonderful from the start. The work has to be done well to leave something beautiful.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

First, nature and the planet - it is the only place we have to live. Our children also inspire us. It drives us to share and teach with our children that they can learn this work and also learn to love what you do. Each book is made with love and commitment, to my sister and me it is pleasant and relaxing.
