In Native American smudge traditions, Abalone Shells are said to be a gift from the lakes & oceans to help call in the element of Water to balance the four elements during a smudge ritual. It is used as a dish to place your smudge stick in during a ritual, ceremony, or simply just to set it in to let burn on its own.
Sadly, abalone shells are now on the endangered species list and it just feels out of place to use a real shell during such a cleansing ritual.
In collaboration with Amelia Brooklyn - we designed a Ceramic Abalone Shell to combine the traditional use of clay (earth) & abalone (water). It's iridescent colors and raw outer shell bring in the mystical and magical elements of Grandmother Ocean.
Wonderful to use with any incense (holes to insert), charcoal, and smudge sticks.
