How To Smudge:

Smudging is a personal ritual which belongs to you. There is no wrong way to do it. Here is just a suggestion of how to begin your journey, then make it however you would like...

Sit in a comfortable seated position in your sacred space, the place you feel most safe. Light a piece at the top of your smudge stick and sit with your eyes closed, holding the smudge stick at your heart center. Breathe in the sacred scent of these healing herbs and meditate for a little bit, calm the mind, just be. When you are ready, stand and begin to move the smudge stick sunwise (clockwise) around your body starting at your head and slowly moving all the way down to your feet and back up again. Eyes closed or open, it is up to you. Say out loud or to yourself all of the energy that you want to rid from your self (stress, negative thoughts, ego, impatience) - this is not neccessary as the sage will do this anyways, but I like the idea of also saying it. It is nice, and tradition, to waft the smoke about with the underside of a feather. When smudging your self, waft the smoke towards you. After you have spoke all that you want to cleanse, begin speaking all that you want to bring in and repeat sun-wise! Speak of all of your hopes, dreams, manifestations, the energies you want to attract, and all of the good-ness. If you can, leave a door or window open - allowing the smoke to float outwards and up! The smoke represents prayer going out into the universe & up to the cosmos to manifest. Do this same ritual when smudging your space or home - starting at the front door and working sunwise (clockwise) throughout your home until you end back at the beginning. When I smudge my space I like to set different intentions for different parts of my house. For example, in my studio I want to rid self-doubt, negativity, and stress and welcome in inspiration, creativity, and motivation - in my room I want to rid negativity from bad dreams & stress from the day and welcome in love & calmness.

After, place your smudge stick in an Abalone Shell or ceramic dish. It will go out on its own if not too much of the herb was lit, or you can cut the lit piece off an smoosh it out.

Origin of herbs:

White Sage - from Southern California. Carlos, a native from Mexico who tends to the sage on his land and supports his family with the harvest he sells. Only leaves picked, no de-rooting, so that the plant may continue to grow.

Sweetgrass - sourced from First Nation's families in Sask, Canada.

Lavender - from Lavender By The Bay, a lavender farm in East Marion, NY.

Roses - origin varies, usually from New York.

Palo Santo - from Peru.
